Ernest Loring "Rosso" Nichols (8 Maggio 1905 – 28 giugno 1965) è stato un trombettista cornettist, compositore, cantante e compositore.
Durante la sua lunga carriera, Nichols registrati in un'ampia varietà di stili musicali, e il critico Steve Leggett lo descrive come "un esperto cornettista, un solido improvvisatore, e a quanto pare un maniaco del lavoro, dal momento che egli si dice che sono apparsi su più di 4.000 registrazioni durante gli anni 1920 da solo."
Nichols era nato il 8 Maggio 1905 a Ogden, Utah, Stati Uniti. Suo padre era un college professore di musica, e Nichols è stato un bambino prodigio, perché da dodici è già difficile pezzi di set per suo padre banda di ottoni. Giovani Nichols sentito le prime registrazioni della Original Dixieland Jazz Band, e poi quelli di Bix Beiderbecke, e questi ha avuto una forte influenza sul giovane cornettista. Il suo stile è diventato lucido, pulito e incisivo.
Nei primi anni 1920, Nichols spostato il Midwest e si unirono ad un gruppo chiamato Syncopating Sette. Quando la band si sciolse, si unì alla Johnny Johnson Orchestra e andarono a New York nel 1923. New York rimarrà per sempre la sua base per gli anni successivi.
