Vittorio Gassman (Gênova, 1 de setembro de 1922 - Roma, 29 de junho de 2000), conhecido como Il Mattatore, foi um ator e diretor de teatro e de cinema italiano muito popular.
Nascido em Gênova, em uma família de origem alemã, Gassman é considerado um dos maiores atores italianos, e é lembrado pela seu extremo profissionalismo, versatilidade e magnetismo. Sua longa carreira abrange tanto produções importantes como dezenas de filmes menos famosos (que, no entanto, lhe valeram uma grande popularidade).
Ainda jovem, Gassman mudou-se para Roma, onde frequentou a Academia Nacional de Arte Dramática, onde estudavam outras grandes figuras do cinema e teatro italianos, como Paolo Stoppa, Rina Morelli, Adolfo Celi, Luigi Squarzina, Elio Pandolfi, Rossella Falk, Lea Padovani e, depois, Paolo Panelli, Nino Manfredi, Tino Buzzarelli, Gianrico Tedeschi, Monica Vitti, Luca Ronconi e outros.
Sua estréia no teatro deu-se em Milão, em 1942, com Alda Borelli em Nemica di Niccodemi. De volta a Roma, no Teatro Eliseo, juntou-se a Tino Carraro e Ernesto Calindri em um trio que se tornou célebre e com o qual recitou em diversas óperas, de comédias burguesas a um sofisticado teatro intelectual, sem aparentar dificuldades em passar de um estilo a outro.
