Vittorio Gassman est un acteur de cinéma et de théâtre, metteur en scène italien, né à Gênes le 1 septembre 1922 et mort à Rome le 29 juin 2000. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands acteurs du théâtre et du cinéma italiens, connu pour son professionnalisme, sa polyvalence et sa présence. Sa carrière comportant à la fois des productions importantes et des douzaines de comédies légères l'a rendu extrêmement populaire.
Il fait partie, au même titre que Nino Manfredi, Marcello Mastroianni, Alberto Sordi, Ugo Tognazzi et Monica Vitti, des monstres sacrés de la comédie à l'italienne telle qu'elle se cristallise à compter du Pigeon.
Vittorio Gassman, né Vittorio Gassmann, nait à Gênes d'un père allemand, Heinrich Gassmann et d'une mère italienne de confession juive, Luisa Ambroon, originaire de Pise. Il passe son adolescence à Rome. Là, outre sa passion pour le sport, il révèle des dons précoces pour l'écriture. En sortant du lycée, en 1941, il s'inscrit à l'université de Rome mais, sous l'impulsion de sa mère, il suit également les cours de l'Académie nationale d'art dramatique que dirige Silvio D'Amico. Repéré pour ses qualités, Vittorio Gassman se tourne vers le théâtre en 1943.
