Post nasceu Emily Preço em Baltimore, Maryland, possivelmente em outubro de 1872 (a data exata é contestada). Seu pai era arquiteto, Bruce Preço, e sua mãe era Josephine (Lee) Preço de Wilkes-Barre, Pensilvânia.
