Édouard Louis Joseph, baron Merckx, plus connu sous le nom d’Eddy Merckx, est un cycliste belge né le 17 juin 1945 à Meensel-Kiezegem, commune du Brabant flamand à l'est de Louvain.
Professionnel de 1965 à 1978, Eddy Merckx est souvent considéré comme le plus grand cycliste de l'Histoire. Il a remporté 625 courses (525 victoires sur route, 98 succès sur la piste et 2 bouquets en cyclo-cross) durant sa carrière, ce qui constitue un record. Surnommé « Le Cannibale » ou « L'Ogre de Tervuren » pour son insatiabilité, Eddy Merckx a notamment gagné 5 Tours de France, 5 Tours d'Italie, 3 championnats du monde en ligne, un Tour d'Espagne, le record de l'heure et 31 victoires dans les classiques (dont 19 monuments). Il est élu « Athlète belge du XX siècle », ainsi que meilleur cycliste du XX siècle par l'Union cycliste internationale.
Eddy Merckx est né le 17 juin 1945 à Meensel-Kiezegem au 29 de la Tieltsestraat. Il est le fils de Jules Merckx, un Belge néerlandophone, menuisier puis épicier à Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, une commune en région bruxelloise, et de Jenny Pittomvils, une Belge francophone. Il est l'aîné de la famille, sa sœur Micheline et son frère Michel, jumeaux, sont nés le 23 mai 1948.
