Paul Thomas Mann (Lubecca, 6 giugno 1875 – Kilchberg, 12 agosto 1955) è stato uno scrittore e saggista tedesco.
Premio Nobel nel 1929, è considerato una delle figure di maggior rilievo della letteratura europea del Novecento.
Paul Thomas Mann nacque a Lubecca, in Germania, secondogenito di Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, senatore e facoltoso commerciante, e di Júlia da Silva Bruhns, nata da padre tedesco e madre brasiliana a Rio de Janeiro ma emigrata in Germania all'età di sette anni. Nonostante la confessione cattolica della madre, Mann venne battezzato secondo la fede luterana del padre.
Il piccolo passava l'estate a Travemünde, sul Baltico, dove già dava spazio alla propria indole sognatrice immerso nella bellezza del luogo. Una certa indipendenza spirituale gli fece frequentare la scuola con disinteresse, preferendo dedicarsi a letture e studi personali e lasciando da parte le esigenze didattiche. Frequentò le scuole a indirizzo commerciale del Katharineum, a Lubecca, dato che il padre voleva un successore per l'impresa familiare. Negli stessi anni Thomas scrisse i primi racconti e le prime poesie, alcune delle quali dedicate all'amico Armin Martens, immortalato nelle pagine del Tonio Kröger con il nome di Hans Hansen, e altre, d'amore, a una compagna bruna di cui non seppe più nulla.
