Richard Stephen Dreyfuss (New York, 29 ottobre 1947) è un attore statunitense.
Attore sensibile e dotato di una grande carica ironica, ha avuto una carriera fortemente segnata dai problemi di natura fisica e psicologica. Proviene da una famiglia ebrea.
Nel 1978 vince l'Oscar come miglior attore protagonista e il David di Donatello per il miglior attore straniero per il film Goodbye amore mio! (The Goodbye Girl) diretto nel 1977 dal regista Herbert Ross.
Uno dei suoi primissimi ruoli fu quello di uno studente che viveva nello stesso complesso di Dustin Hoffman nel film Il laureato,che si offre di chiamare la polizia per via degli urli sentiti nella camera di Hoffman.
Lanciato nel 1973 da American Graffiti di George Lucas, con Lo squalo (1975) e Incontri ravvicinati del terzo tipo (1977) di Steven Spielberg, Dreyfuss sembrava avviato a una brillante carriera, quando nel 1978 iniziarono seri problemi personali legati al consumo di cocaina, fino ad un arresto avvenuto nel 1982, dopo un incidente automobilistico causato da un malore dell'attore che era alla guida. Dopo un periodo di riabilitazione, che gli impose una lunga pausa professionale, ristabilito, è tornato alla ribalta interpretando alcune briose commedie come Su e giù per Beverly Hills (1986) di Paul Mazursky, Tin Men - 2 imbroglioni con signora (1986) di Barry Levinson, Sorveglianza... speciale (1987) di John Badham, seguite dal drammatico Pazza (1987) di Martin Ritt, Always - Per sempre (1990) di Steven Spielberg, Rosencrantz e Guildenstern sono morti (1990) di Tom Stoppard, Cartoline dall'inferno (1991) di Mike Nichols, Occhio al testimone e Proibito amare entrambi del 1993, Goodbye Mr. Holland (1995), Il tempo dei cani pazzi (1996) e Poseidon (2006).
