Peter Steele, nome d'arte di Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk (Brooklyn, 4 gennaio 1962 – Brooklyn, 14 aprile 2010), è stato un cantante e bassista statunitense, cofondatore del gruppo doom metal Type O Negative.
Era conosciuto per i suoi atteggiamenti vampireschi, la sua statura di 2,03 metri, la sua voce baritonale e un oscuro e autodenigratorio senso dell'umorismo. I suoi testi erano spesso intensamente personali; trattavano di temi come amore, morte e dipendenza. Steele assegna il merito ai Black Sabbath e ai Beatles della chiave musicale della sua ispirazione.
Steele è nato a Red Hook, Brooklyn, in una famiglia cattolica di origini polacche, russe, islandesi e scozzesi, ed è cresciuto a Bensonhurst e Brighton Beach nei pressi di Brooklyn. Steele era il più giovane di sei figli, con cinque sorelle più grandi. Suo padre combatté nella Seconda guerra mondiale e più tardi lavorò in un cantiere navale. Steele iniziò a prendere lezioni di chitarra a 12 anni, passando dopo sei mesi al basso.
