James "Jimmy" Earl Carter Jr. (Plains, 1º ottobre 1924) è un politico e militare statunitense, 39º presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America dal 1977 al 1981.
In precedenza è stato produttore di arachidi e membro della Commissione Trilaterale. Nel 2002 è stato insignito del Premio Nobel per la pace. In seguito alla morte di George H. W. Bush, avvenuta il 30 novembre 2018, è divenuto il più anziano ex presidente tuttora in vita.
È diventato un attivista all'interno del Partito Democratico. Dal 1963 al 1967, Carter ha prestato servizio nel Senato dello stato della Georgia e nel 1970 è stato eletto Governatore della Georgia, sconfiggendo l'ex governatore Carl Sanders nella Primaria democratica sulla piattaforma anti-segregazione che difende l'azione affermativa per le minoranze etniche. Carter rimane governatore fino al 1975. Ha vinto la nomination presidenziale democratica del 1976. Nelle elezioni generali del 1976, Carter è stato un outsider e ha sconfitto il presidente repubblicano in carica, Gerald Ford.
