Carlo Gregorio Verdone (Roma, 17 novembre 1950) è un regista, attore e sceneggiatore italiano.
È figlio del critico cinematografico Mario Verdone, il quale, sin da bambino, lo avvicinò al mondo del cinema, e di Rossana Schiavina. Il nonno paterno Oreste era un chimico originario di Pozzuoli.
Dopo essersi diplomato al Liceo Classico "Nazareno", si è laureato con 110/110 e lode in Lettere Moderne presso l'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza" con una tesi intitolata Letteratura e cinema muto italiano. Per visionare le pellicole oggetto della tesi si recò, in compagnia del padre a Grado dove ebbe modo di assistere alle proiezioni in presenza della diva del cinema muto Francesca Bertini. Relatrice della tesi fu la prof. Evelina Tarroni. Prima della laurea, Carlo Verdone si diploma anche in regia al Centro sperimentale di cinematografia di Roma.
Notevole è stata, specie ad inizio di carriera, la sua attività artistica rivolta al cabaret e, in particolare, alla televisione, con la partecipazione a programmi caratterizzati da un taglio innovativo (come in Non stop nel 1978, assieme a molti altri attori emergenti) in cui la figura del guitto veniva rivalutata e riportata all'antico splendore. Precedentemente aveva girato alcuni spot per la popolare trasmissione Carosello. Carlo Verdone si diletta sin da giovanissimo nella ripresa amatoriale di cortometraggi. Compra la sua prima cinepresa da Isabella Rossellini, che doveva pagare una bolletta del telefono enorme e non voleva chiedere i soldi al padre. Così, per 80 mila lire, una cifra notevole alla fine degli anni Sessanta, dispone di un'ottima Bolex Paillard.
