Rico Rodriguez, de son vrai nom Emmanuel Rodriguez, aussi connu sous les pseudonymes de Rico, Reco Rodriguez, est un tromboniste jamaïcain d'origine cubaine, né le 17 octobre 1934 à La Havane (Cuba), et mort le 4 septembre 2015 à Londres.
Il est considéré comme łe meilleur tromboniste de reggae des années 1960 et 1970. après Don Drummond (1932-1969), « l'inventeur » du trombone dans la musique populaire jamaïcaine et dont Rico fut l'élève.
Pur produit de la fameuse Alpha Boys Catholic school (Kingston), une école dans laquelle des sœurs catholiques dispensaient une éducation musicale aux garçons issus de milieux défavorisés, avec le fameux chef d'orchestre et vibraphoniste Lennie Hibbert. Dans cette école ont été formés de nombreux membres des Skatalites (Tommy McCook, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond entre autres).
Il débute en Jamaïque avec Ernest Ranglin et Theo Beckford à la fin des années 1950 et émigre au début des années 1960 avec nombre d'autres musiciens jamaïcains en Grande-Bretagne, pariant sur l'opportunité d'enregistrer sur des labels qui revendent ensuite leurs 45 tours en Jamaïque (Orbitone, Pama). Basé à Londres, il joue pour les studios qui enregistrent la musique jamaïcaine Blow your Horn, Brixton Cat (Rico & the Rudies, 1969, Trojan) parfois en tant que leader; certains des morceaux de ce dernier album seront adoptés comme véritables hymnes par les skinheads — alors tout jeune mouvement — pendant british des rude boys jamaïcains. On trouve sur les enregistrements instrumentaux de cette époque de superbes solos de trombone de Rico.
