Richard Petty (surnommé The King), né le 2 juillet 1937 à Level Cross (en) en Caroline du Nord est un ancien pilote automobile américain ayant évolué en Nascar Cup Series (anciennement dénommée Strictly Stock ou Grand National ou Winston Cup Series).
Sa carrière, débutée en juillet 1958, est marquée par sept titres et s'achève lors de la saison 1992 à l'Atlanta Motor Speedway à l'âge de 55 ans.
Fils de Lee Petty et père de Kyle Petty, qui ont tous deux couru en Nascar, c'est une véritable légende vivante dans son pays à la suite de ses résultats impressionnants.
Il a inspiré le personnage de Strip « The King » Weathers (n 43) dans le film d'animation Cars et lui a prêté sa voix dans la version originale. Sa femme Lynda en a fait de même pour la voiture jouant son épouse.
