Mike Horn, né Michael Frédérick Horn le 16 juillet 1966 à Johannesbourg (Afrique du Sud), est un explorateur-aventurier de nationalités suisse et sud-africaine, de culture afrikaner, résidant en Suisse.
Sa mère a travaillé en tant qu'enseignante en économie et son père a enseigné le sport après avoir fait carrière dans le rugby. Il meurt à quarante-deux ans lorsque Mike en a dix-huit.
Pendant son enfance, le sport est son activité de prédilection. Il s’essaie à de nombreuses disciplines, dans lesquelles il excelle : rugby, cricket, athlétisme, tennis, vélo, etc.
De 1984 à 1986, Mike Horn est lieutenant dans les forces spéciales sud-africaines. De retour à la vie civile, il obtient un diplôme dans le domaine de la Science du mouvement humain à l’Université de Stellenbosch. Il travaille ensuite dans l'entreprise de son oncle, d'import-export de fruits et légumes.
En 1990, il décide de changer de vie et de quitter l'Afrique du Sud. Il partage entre amis et famille toutes ses affaires, ne gardant qu’un sac à dos et des vêtements. À cette époque, encore sous embargo, seuls trois pays accueillaient les Sud-Africains sans visa : Israël, l’Angleterre et la Suisse. Un lundi, Mike Horn se rend à l’aéroport et demande un billet pour l’un de ces trois pays… Le premier vol est un Johannesbourg-Zurich. Ce sera donc la Suisse. Les premiers temps sont difficiles et il survit de petits boulots multiples : il travaille dans des fermes, apprend à skier, devient moniteur, garde-rivière, barman, bûcheron, vendangeur, etc. Il se lance également dans les sports d'eau vive : rafting, hydrospeed, canyoning, etc.
