Lee Van Cleef, né le 9 janvier 1925 à Somerville, New Jersey, et mort le 16 décembre 1989 à Oxnard, Californie, est un acteur américain, surtout connu pour ses rôles dans des westerns notamment Et pour quelques dollars de plus et Le Bon, la Brute et le Truand.
Clarence LeRoy Van Cleef Junior est le fils de Clarence LeRoy Van Cleef, descendant de colons néerlandais, et de Marion Levinia (née Van Fleet). Il savait parler le Jersey Dutch, un patois néerlandais en voie d'extinction. Il travaille d'abord comme garçon de ferme dans une communauté hollandaise du New Jersey et s'engage dans l’US Navy durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Après-guerre, il travaille comme comptable et fait du théâtre au sein d'une compagnie amateur.
Il parvient à intégrer la troupe professionnelle de Joshua Logan et est repéré pour son physique particulier par le producteur Stanley Kramer, qui lui propose le rôle d'un tueur dans le film Le train sifflera trois fois (1952). Le succès du film lance sa carrière et il devient un spécialiste des petits rôles de méchants dans les westerns hollywoodiens. En dehors de ses sempiternels seconds rôles de personnages muets pour la plupart, Lee Van Cleef va également jouer dans des rôles plus majeurs comme dans La Hache sanglante (1954) ou bien dans Le Conquérant (1956). Cependant sa carrière commence sérieusement à décliner à la fin des années 1950, et ses sérieux penchants alcooliques n'arrangent pas les choses. Il est sauvé par les séries de western pour la télévision qui rencontrent bientôt un succès grandissant : Zorro, L'Homme à la carabine , Au nom de la loi, Bonanza, etc. et aussi par le western cinématographique Bravados. Il y interprète un hors-la-loi complexe, jugé et condamné à mort pour braquage de banque et complicité de meurtre, et comme fugitif, faussement accusé de viol et d'assassinat par un vengeur aveugle. Il donne, agenouillé et suppliant avant de mourir, la réplique à Gregory Peck. Ce dont celui-ci se souviendra avec remords, lorsqu'il s'apercevra de sa terrible méprise. En 1958, Lee Van Cleef échappe de peu à la mort : alors qu'il roule en état d'ébriété avancée, il est victime d'un accident de voiture qui lui brise le genou, les médecins lui pronostiquent alors qu'il ne pourra plus jamais monter à cheval : sa carrière d'acteur semble condamnée. Après sa rééducation, il se met à la peinture figurative et à la décoration d'intérieur. Il reprend tout de même son métier d'acteur pour deux westerns importants : L'Homme qui tua Liberty Valance et La Conquête de l'Ouest , mais ces engagements restent très épisodiques.
