François Mitterrand (.mw-parser-output .prononciation>a{background:url("//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8a/Loudspeaker.svg/11px-Loudspeaker.svg.png")center left no-repeat;padding-left:15px;font-size:smaller}), né le 26 octobre 1916 à Jarnac (Charente) et mort le 8 janvier 1996 à Paris (7 arrondissement), est un homme d'État français, président de la République du 21 mai 1981 au 17 mai 1995.
Agent contractuel sous le régime de Vichy puis résistant, il est onze fois ministre sous la IV République, notamment ministre des Anciens combattants et des Victimes de guerre, ministre de la France d'Outre-mer, ministre de l'Intérieur et garde des Sceaux, ministre de la Justice. Il est député de 1946 à 1958, sénateur de 1959 à 1962, puis à nouveau député de 1962 à 1981. L'attentat simulé de l'Observatoire le tient un temps à l'écart de la vie politique.
Opposé au retour du général de Gaulle au pouvoir, il affronte celui-ci lors de l'élection présidentielle de 1965, qu'il perd au second tour. En 1971, il devient premier secrétaire du Parti socialiste, créé à l'issue du congrès d'Épinay. Candidat de l'union de la gauche à la présidentielle de 1974, il est battu au second tour par Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
