Edward Regan Murphy, dit Eddie Murphy, né le 3 avril 1961 à New York, est un acteur américain. Il est également chanteur, humoriste et producteur de cinéma.
Murphy devient célèbre aux États-Unis grâce à ses talents d'humoriste, découverts dans ses prestations à l'émission Saturday Night Live et ses spectacles Delirious (1984) et Raw (1987) ainsi que par sa célèbre phrase « Hey Guys! » (en français : Salut les mecs !). Par la suite, sa renommée est devenue mondiale grâce à ses rôles dans Le Flic de Beverly Hills, Docteur Dolittle, Le Professeur Foldingue, et dans Dreamgirls, pour lequel il reçoit une nomination aux Oscars de 2007 dans la catégorie du meilleur second rôle.
Il est également la voix originale de L'Âne dans Shrek. La chaîne Comedy Central le classe au premier rang des plus grands comiques américains de tous les temps.
Edward Regan Murphy est né le 3 avril 1961 à New York, dans l'arrondissement de Brooklyn. Sa mère qui se nomme Lilian Murphy est téléphoniste, tandis que son père, Charles Edward Murphy, est policier. Le jeune Eddie a trois ans lorsque le couple divorce (son père sera tragiquement tué cinq ans plus tard par sa nouvelle compagne). Il vit alors avec sa mère et son frère Charles (acteur et scénariste, décédé le 12 avril 2017) à Brooklyn jusqu'à l'âge de dix ans. Sa mère se remarie ensuite avec Vernon Lynch, un ancien boxeur travaillant en tant que contremaître dans une usine de crèmes glacées et ayant déjà un fils prénommé Vernon. La famille déménage à Roosevelt, Long Island, où Murphy fréquente l'école. Son goût pour l'humour se développe très tôt, et Murphy est déjà célèbre à la Roosevelt High School (Roosevelt, New York) (en) pour ses imitations et ses blagues qui faisaient fureur chez les élèves, mais aussi chez les enseignants. Il comprend vite que son humour peut le mener loin et cherche très tôt à se produire devant un public. Il est persuadé de la possibilité de faire carrière dans le show-business et se donne en spectacle à la moindre occasion.
