David James Elliott (DJE) est un acteur, réalisateur et producteur canadien né le 21 septembre 1960 à Milton.
David James Elliott, de son vrai nom David William Smith, est né le 21 septembre 1960 à Milton (une petite ville de la banlieue de Toronto) en Ontario, au Canada. Il est le second de trois enfants. Avant de vivre au Canada, la famille Smith habitait les Bahamas.
Adolescent, DJE s'intéressait à la musique et au rock'n roll. Il est d'ailleurs, pendant un certain temps, leader d'un groupe et quitte le lycée pour y consacrer tout son temps. David et son groupe partent à la conquête de Toronto, la capitale de l'Ontario, en jouant dans les bals ou pour de maigres cachets dans des pensions. Le groupe change plusieurs fois de nom, pour finalement se dissoudre.
DJE abandonne la musique et rentre à Milton terminer le lycée. Il n'a que 19 ans. Sa classe d'histoire du théâtre étudie Le Roi Lear où il joue le rôle de Lear ; son professeur, impressionné par sa prestation l'encourage à persévérer dans la voie d'acteur pour en faire sa carrière. C'est alors que son frère lui parle du Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, à Toronto, qui possède le meilleur cours de comédie du Canada. Il décide alors d'auditionner pour cette école. DJE sort premier de sa promotion de Ryerson, et auditionne pour le Festival de Stratford du Canada à Stratford (Ontario). Il y reste deux ans comme membre de la troupe junior et remporte le Jean Chalmers Award dans la catégorie meilleur espoir.
