Leonard Bernstein (Lawrence, Massachusetts; 25 de agosto de 1918 - Ciudad de Nueva York, Nueva York; 14 de octubre de 1990) fue un compositor, pianista y director de orquesta judío estadounidense. Fue el primer director de orquesta nacido en los Estados Unidos que obtuvo fama mundial, célebre por haber dirigido la Orquesta Filarmónica de Nueva York, por sus Conciertos para jóvenes en la televisión entre 1958 y 1972 y por sus múltiples composiciones, entre ellas West Side Story (1957), Candide y Un día en Nueva York (1944). También fue una figura esencial en el resurgir moderno de la música de Gustav Mahler, el compositor que le interesaba más apasionadamente.
Bernstein nació en Lawrence, Massachusetts, en 1918 en una familia judía procedente del óblast de Rivne, Ucrania. Su abuela insistió en que su primer nombre fuera Louis, pero sus padres siempre lo llamaron Leonard, que les gustaba más. Oficialmente se cambió el nombre a los dieciséis años. Su padre, Sam Bernstein, era un hombre de negocios, y en principio se opuso al interés de su hijo por la música. No obstante, lo llevó con frecuencia a conciertos. Siendo muy joven, escuchó una interpretación de piano y quedó inmediatamente cautivado, así que empezó a estudiar el instrumento. Estudió en la escuela Garrison y la Boston Latin School. Su padre rechazó pagarle las lecciones de piano, por lo que Bernstein se dedicó a enseñar a estudiantes jóvenes, empleando las ganancias en sus propias clases de piano.
