Alfonso John Romero (Colorado Springs, Colorado; 28 de octubre de 1967) es un diseñador de videojuegos cuya importancia es fundamental en la historia de esta industria, especialmente en el género de los videojuegos de disparos en primera persona. Es más conocido por ser cofundador de Id Software y principal responsable de muchos de los títulos de la empresa, originalmente creados para PC, y posteriormente adaptados a consolas, incluyendo Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, y Quake. A él se acredita el haber acuñado el término "Deathmatch". Actualmente es jefe del sitio web loot drop.
Romero nació en Colorado Springs, Colorado, en los Estados Unidos de América. Él es es de ascendencia mexicana, yaqui y cherokee. Su madre Ginny dio luz a John seis semanas prematuramente. Sus padres se habían casado solo unos meses antes, habiendo vivido tiempos difíciles. Ginny, una persona de buen humor y fácil de tratar, conoció a Alfonso Antonio Romero cuando eran adolescentes, en Tucson, Arizona. Alfonso, un mexicano-estadunidense de primera generación, era un técnico de mantenimiento en una base de la fuerza aérea, pasaba sus días componiendo aires acondicionados y sistemas de calentamiento. Después de que Alfonso y Ginny casaron, se dirigieron en un auto Chrysler 1948 con trescientos dólares a Colorado, esperando que su relación interracial prosperara en un ambiente más tolerante.
