Frenkie de Jong (born 12 May 1997) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Spanish club Barcelona and the Netherlands national team.
De Jong began his professional career at Willem II in 2015, but transferred to Ajax for a fee of €1 a year later. In the Dutch capital, starring as a defensive midfielder, he established himself as one of the best young players in Europe. He transferred to Spanish club Barcelona in July 2019, having agreed to sign for them in a deal worth an initial €75m fee.
De Jong made his senior international debut for the Netherlands in September 2018.
De Jong was born in Arkel, South Holland. A youth product of Willem II, de Jong played through the entire youth system at the club. On 10 May 2015, De Jong made his Eredivisie debut against ADO Den Haag, as a substitute for Terell Ondaan in a 1–0 home win. He played 22 minutes.
At the beginning of the season, on August 22, 2015, Ajax purchased De Jong on a four year contract, for a symbolic €1 fee which included a 10% re-sell bonus. On August 23, 2015, he was loaned back to Willem II until December 31, 2015. He played in one Eredivisie match against PEC Zwolle. He was an unused substitute in four games.
