Janet Damita Jo Jackson (* 16. Mai 1966 in Gary, Indiana) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin, Songwriterin, Musikproduzentin, Tänzerin und Schauspielerin. Sie ist das jüngste Mitglied der Musikerfamilie Jackson. Ihre fünf älteren Brüder wurden als Jackson Five bekannt, ihr Bruder Michael Jackson war einer der erfolgreichsten Pop-Musiker. Mit mehr als 160 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern zählt Janet Jackson zu den erfolgreichsten Interpretinnen.
Janet Jackson ist das jüngste der zehn gemeinsamen Kinder von Joseph Jackson und Katherine Jackson. Die Familie lebte zusammen in einem Zwei-Schlafzimmer-Bungalow nahe dem Stahlwerk, in dem Vater Joseph arbeitete. Mutter Katherine war als Verkäuferin bei Sears beschäftigt. Janet wurde von ihrer Mutter nach den Regeln der Zeugen Jehovas erzogen.
Während ihre fünf älteren Brüder Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon und Michael als die Jackson Five Ende der 1960er Jahre ihre Karriere begannen, plante Janet, die eine Vorliebe für Pferde hatte, eine Laufbahn als Jockey. Ihr Vater hatte nach dem schrumpfenden Erfolg der Band jedoch andere Pläne für seine Kinder, und so standen die fünf ab April 1974 in Las Vegas gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Die damals achtjährige Janet zog währenddessen mit Parodien bekannter Stars wie Cher, Marie Osmond und Mae West das Interesse des Publikums auf sich. Jane Cornwell dokumentierte später in der Biografie der Sängerin, Janet Jackson (2002), dass ihr Vater Joseph ihr im Alter von acht Jahren sagte, sie solle ihn nicht mehr mit „Dad“ rufen, sondern mit „Joseph“, da er jetzt ihr Manager sei.
