Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston gibi başarılı bir gospel şarkıcısının kızı ve Dionne Warwick gibi başarılı bir R&B şarkıcısının kuzeni olarak dünyaya geldi. Ayrıca efsane isim Aretha Franklin, vaftiz annesiydi. Böyle bir ailede Whitney de çocukluk yaşlarından itibaren müzikle ilgilenmeye başladı. Önceleri doğduğu yer olan New Jersey'deki kilise korolarında şarkı söyleyen Whitney, zamanla profesyonelliğe adım attı.
Önceleri annesinin, Chaka Khan'ın ve Lou Rawls'ın vokalistliğini yapan Whitney Houston aynı zamanda mankenlik de yapıyordu.
