Jacob Joseph Arrieta (born March 6, 1986) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs. He stands 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) tall and weighs 225 pounds (102 kg). He has won the Cy Young Award and has been selected an All-Star.
The Orioles selected Arrieta in the 2007 MLB draft, and he debuted for the Orioles in 2010. The Orioles traded Arrieta to the Cubs in 2013. In 2015, Arrieta won the Cy Young Award, was the MLB wins leader, pitched a no-hitter, and set a major league record at 0.75 earned run average (ERA) for the lowest second-half ERA. Arrieta threw his second no-hitter in 2016.
Born in Farmington, Missouri, Arrieta grew up in Plano, Texas, and attended Plano East Senior High School. As a high school senior he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round of the 2004 draft, but instead he chose to attend college.
