Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp (/ˈriːvə ˈstiːən.kʌmp/; 19 August 1983 – 14 February 2013) was a South African model. On Valentine's Day 2013, Steenkamp was shot dead by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, who said he believed she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom. Pistorius was later found guilty of culpable homicide at his trial the following year, was given five years in jail and served a one-year prison sentence. On 3 December 2015, the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa overturned the conviction for culpable homicide and instead convicted Pistorius of murder. The sentencing of Pistorius began on 13 June 2016 and concluding arguments were made on 15 June 2016. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison on 6 July 2016, despite the minimum sentence for murder in South Africa being 15 years. On Appeal by the state for a longer prison sentence, the Supreme Court of Appeal extended Pistorius's prison term to 13 years and five months.
